Britain's Wildest Places To Visit

The emptiness of Rannock Moor in Scotland

Despite being one of Europe's most crowded lands there are still plenty of wild, untamed swathes of countryside.

And for the majority of those of us living in crowded urban environments, to have wilderness on our doorstep is something we perhaps take for granted.

In his book on wild places, the author Robert Macfarlane said: "Openness is rare, but its importance is proportionately great. Living constantly among streets and houses induces a sense of enclosure, of short-range sight."

So leave your urban comforts or your safe country village and explore Britain's top wild places.

Rannoch Moor, Scottish Highlands
Cape Cornwall, Cornwall
Sandwood Bay, Sutherland
Severn Estuary
Mourne Mountains, Down, Northern Ireland
Lindisfarne, Northumberland
Bodmin Moor, Cornwall
The Devil’s Point, Cairngorms
Orford Ness, Suffolk
Snowdonia
Isles of Scilly
Ronas Hill, Shetland
