Construction is due to begin on shortly on US property tycoon Donald Trump's controversial luxury golf resort.

The coastal resort in Balmedie, Aberdeenshire, will have two golf courses, a hotel and almost 1,000 holiday homes.

Mr Trump's plan has been supported by the Scottish Government despite fierce opposition from local residents and environmentalists.

Several people who live on the site are refusing to sell their homes to make way for the £1 billion resort.

Councillors gave the green light for preparatory construction work at a meeting.

Mr Trump, who stars in the US version of television show The Apprentice, thanked Aberdeenshire Council for its support.

The Formartine Area Committee approved an application to begin grass planting on the sand dunes on the Menie Estate.

Trump's son said on Wednesday that the resort could be ready within 18 months.

Despite the news, protestors have vowed to continue their fight against the resort.

Martin Glegg, who co-ordinates opposition group Tripping Up Trump, said: "This campaign is far from over and grows stronger every day."
