There’s no great secret to going green. Use less, recycle more, and make sure only real rubbish ends up in the bin. And the beauty of it is that, if you were devising a plan to save some cash, it would say pretty much the same thing.

"People needn’t feel helpless as fuel and food costs rise because they can actually save money by being green in their everyday lives," says Marie Reynolds of Friends of the Earth.

"Things like updating the home boiler, installing better insulation and using public transport instead of the car could save households hundreds of pounds every year – and cut carbon dioxide emissions at the same time," she added.

So the good news, in these uncertain times, is that economy and environmentalism are two sides of the same coin. If you become more thrifty, you’ll almost certainly be cutting your carbon footprint, too. Here’s our rundown of some of the best tips for saving a few pounds and reducing your eco impact.
